What the mod 2 bike test is like

I personally found the mod 2 bike test to be straight forward – that said I did scrape through with about 8 minors.

At this stage you’re likely to have fairly decent bike control having already completed your mod 1. If you’re an experience driver then your road sense is likely to pretty good, along with your general understanding of the highway code.

For me it was mostly about the following:

  • Positioning around junctions, turns, roundabouts etc
  • Keeping my speed up when it should be up
  • Noticing speed limit changes
  • Keeping my speed down when it should be down
  • Lifesavers
  • Lifesavers
  • Lifesavers
  • Lifesavers
If you don’t know what a lifesaver is yet: STEP AWAY FROM THE MOTORCYCLE.

During the test you’ll get instructions from your examiner over the radio very similar to what you (hopefully) will have experienced with your instructor. You’ll probably find (s)he wants to stop a couple of times to take some notes. When they stop, just take it in your stride. Don’t worry about what they’re writing. Chances are you’re going to get some minors – don’t dwell on it and just focus on the task at hand.

The other thing that I found absolutely critical is local knowledge of the test routes. Where I took my test in Redditch there is a 40 mph dual carriage way where examiners like to give you the instruction to ‘carry straight on while the road permits’. The problem is that ‘straight on’ becomes a taxi and bus only route and you have to take the initiative to signal and turn left without any instruction. While you should probably be able to see this is happening, there is absolutely no way I would have done this without knowing about the road from my instructor in advance especially with the nerves and everything else you have to think about while on your test.
Other than that, there’s not a lot to say about the Module 2 test. Try to relax as best you can, enjoy it and you’ll be golden! And when (not if!) you pass, don’t ruin it by being a dick on the way home.
